Welcome Nerds

March 7, 2021

I’m not too sure what all this will end up being about – but there’s too much nerd stuff in my life that I enjoy, and wouldn’t mind sharing out. It covers a very wide range.. Computers, astronomy, photography, astronomy & photography (astrophotography), Raspberry Pi projects, and I’m sure a few others sprinkled around here and there.

From an early age I wasn’t too afraid to take things apart to figure out how they worked.. much to the dismay of my parents, and the can opener, and the new 486x computer, and much more. Slowly I learned how to put it all back together again too. Technology made my brain excited – from the early days of dial-up BBS text-based services (Rippers BBS, in Bullhead City, AZ, 1995’ish), through more dial-up… and more dial-up.. and even more dial-up. haha It’s crazy we used to pay for multiple phone lines.

I learned to build my own computers, ranging from normal rigs up through top of the line gaming systems. Found a good group of friends that I used to game with religiously for years playing Final Fantasy XI online – I’m still connected to that entire group up through today.. funny how a video game can form a family like that..

I own a decent telescope with a quality EQ Tracking mount that I use for astrophotography sometimes – snapping pictures of planets, nebulae, and galaxies. It’s a technical & time consuming hobby.. not to mention expensive.. but its been worth it and its also taught me a lot too. I’m sure I’ll make a post or three about the scope and the images I captured, as well as the trials and errors and painful learning lessons along the way.

Raspberry Pi micro computers have been a fun learning experience as well over the past few years. They’ve taught me some basics of coding in Python (very basic) & Bash/Shell script, through multiple little projects of working with humidity & temperature sensors, motion sensors, cameras, and recently a magnetometer. All of these are works in progress, and I’m POSITIVE I’ll post a lot about this side of things because its the current focus.

We’ll see whats to come as time goes on. I’ll post images, and links to projects I’m following/working on, as well as the equipment I own and use and play with (some will be affiliate links, but not spammy). The goal is to document what I’m doing so I can look back when I screw something up and go “Oh… well that was kinda dumb…”, as well as sharing the learning experiences and results as well. Hopefully you enjoy following along.
